Learning a new language is always very difficult, I would know because I had to learn English when I was in second grade, and it was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. I grew up speaking Spanish and only Spanish. None of my family that lived in El Paso knew English, so growing up I never heard anyone speak English. I remember when I started school I was enrolled in a bilingual class, so it wasn’t a big difference when everyone in my class spoke Spanish. Everything stayed the same until I got to second grade, that’s the year when everyone had to start learning English. I was actually very excited but at the same time very scared to start learning English.
Second grade was the hardest year for me, learning a new language was very difficult. I remember complaining to my parents about it, telling them I didn’t want to learn a new language because I really liked Spanish. After second grade was over, I was still struggling with the new language but I felt more comfortable speaking it. Going into third grade my mom decided it would be a good idea to take me out of bilingual class, so now I was with students that didn’t know much Spanish so I had to start practicing my English. That was also a very hard year for me because my teacher didn’t know Spanish so she would teach just in English so I struggled a lot because of that. The years passed and I got more comfortable with the language I would speak it and understand it better than when I started.
Now that I’m in high school I really appreciate my second grade teacher for what he did, even if back then I didn’t want to learn it, now I know why he did it. Because of him now I can help my parents out in their business since they don’t know any English I’m the only one from us three that knows the language and I’m very glad I learned it at a young age.
I had to learn Spanish in second grade as well and now I consider my self lucky. It just makes everything simpler.
