FoxFire Project

The Foxfire Project, begun by Eliot Wigginton and his students in the 1960s, was designed to save from oblivion the local color of a particular Southern region: the dialect, customs, recipes, antiques, manners, clothes, games and rituals of a particular area.

As a class, the students enrolled in Ms. Rojo's AP English Language and Composition class have compiled their own stories for their own version of a “Foxfire E-Magazine” renamed "Leafing".

When Fluffy Came into My Life

I had different pets growing up but none resembled my cat, Fluffy. I adored her the day we first met and she portrayed everything I wanted in a pet.  When she came into my life she became my world.
My first pet was an ugly, disfigured hermit crab. My parents purchased the creature from the Seven Mile Fair. I would watch the crab in its cage but after some time I grew bored and I abandoned the creature. I shed no tears for the pet when it passed away.
For my eighth birthday my father gave me three turtles. I had never seen anything cuter in my life. I took good care of the turtles even though they didn’t like me. I cleaned their tank and made sure they wouldn’t go down the drain and die an atrocious death.  Like the hermit crab, my interest in the turtles wore off and caring for them became a chore. My parents told me that I should give them to a cousin and I relentlessly did so. When I lived with my grandparents we also had different pets.
While I lived in Wisconsin we had a dog and chickens. My father bought the chickens for my grandpa so he could eat fresh eggs in the morning. Taking care of the chickens was fun especially when we round them up in the barn.  The problem was I couldn’t really call them my own and they didn’t seem like pet material.  Brooklyn, the guard dog, was a pretty brown red-nose Pitbull. She acted fierce but she was the most loving dog in the world.  She lived near the wild forest so she smelled horrendous and I didn’t like to be around her.  Brooklyn was somewhat my first real pet but I did not love her as much as I love Fluffy.
When I met Fluffy I never intended to look for a pet but she did find me. My mother and I went to one of my aunt’s house. My aunt had cats all around her house.  My mother and aunt were talking and I sat in the living room when out of nowhere a little kitty came near me. She seemed so small and she looked funny with her ears that appeared too big for her head. Her fur on her body was soft, long and orange and the fur on her little belly was white. She sat on my shoulder like a parrot and I fell in love. I asked my mother if I could take her home but she said she had to talk to my father first. I frowned I wanted her today not tomorrow or the next day. I didn’t know if I would ever get the chance to take this precious kitten home and call her mine.

A couple of weeks later I had the chance to her home. My aunt had a birthday party and I begged my father then. My father told me that I could as long as I cleaned up after her. I took my Fluffy home with me. I cleaned her litter box, took her a bath, and brushed her fur. I took care of her and at times she took care of me. I love her and I always will.

  1. The pets that you fall in love with aren't your pets anymore, they're part of your friends and family.
