FoxFire Project

The Foxfire Project, begun by Eliot Wigginton and his students in the 1960s, was designed to save from oblivion the local color of a particular Southern region: the dialect, customs, recipes, antiques, manners, clothes, games and rituals of a particular area.

As a class, the students enrolled in Ms. Rojo's AP English Language and Composition class have compiled their own stories for their own version of a “Foxfire E-Magazine” renamed "Leafing".

A Few Furry Feline

Everyone in my family is pet friendly, some more than others. It's true that having a pet takes a lot of responsibility. Ever since I can remember, there has always been an animal to take care of in our home. There have been cats, dogs, hamsters, fishes and even a snail. Dogs, commonly known to be "man's best friend", appear to be popular among families with several children, cat's on the other hand are not. They have a peculiar personality and are owned by single's. In my family we lean more to owning cats rather than dogs.
When I was younger, at about 8 years old, I can remember vividly we came to own over 13 cats all at once. To other people this may have seemed disgusting, but it really wasn't. Some of the cats would sleep outdoors and very few, usually the kittens, would stay inside.
My mother, a very clean person, likes a clean home. It wasn't hard to keep a clean house, not if she encouraged the eldest of us to help around. All of the cats had their vaccines, with a name tag on their collars.
Only about five made it with us after we moved to the Northeast. The other cats were taken in by several friends or other family members. It became hard for us kids to let them go, they were our pets who we had become fond of. Now, we own three cats and two dogs, one cat for every person living in my house plus two dogs.
They aren't just any animals, they’re our pets and more importantly family members. My uncle once told me to stay away from people who dislike animals because they’re bad people. In a way I do believe that owning a pet brings forth a sort of enjoyment and companionship than those who don’t. To me owing all those pets meant something more than just taking care of an animal. I had made a new friend who would stay with me and adore me for who I ‘am without needing much.

  1. I really like this because I'm obsessed with cats and I like anything that involves cats. However, I can't have any at the moment because my mom hates them. Trade me moms please.

  2. I'm not a really big fan of cats, but after reading this I guess living with cats isnt that bad. That's so cool..13 cats? I have two dogs and they're too much trouble! I can't imagine having 13 cats all at once.
