FoxFire Project

The Foxfire Project, begun by Eliot Wigginton and his students in the 1960s, was designed to save from oblivion the local color of a particular Southern region: the dialect, customs, recipes, antiques, manners, clothes, games and rituals of a particular area.

As a class, the students enrolled in Ms. Rojo's AP English Language and Composition class have compiled their own stories for their own version of a “Foxfire E-Magazine” renamed "Leafing".

A Military Tradition

Traditions the transmissions of ideas and customs tossed down from generations to generations. Traditions in my aspect rather quite complicated but my ancestry has acquired one specific tradition that continues to this very day. Serving in our nations armed forces according from my family tree appears as our tradition. I find this tradition as quite an abnormality as many folks tend to have far more complex traditions dating back hundreds of years ago but mines only date to about two hundred years ago. I of course embrace this tradition and plan on continuing the tradition of serving in armed forces.
The tradition has actually played a big role in my life, almost affecting every aspect of my daily life. My father currently serving in armed forces which means I grew up in a military lifestyleMany folks have already stated my brothers and me as “Military Brats” which seems odd to many folks but to me it’s quite normal. Growing up in a military family my parents would use the army values to influence my appearance, attitude, and my views upon society. Even when growing up in a military house hold I really never quite understand what tradition my family follows. It would take me years to learn my family’s rich history of serving in U.S Armed Forces. Eventually the day would come when my parents and grandparents would sit my brother down to explain our glorious tradition.
Eventually as stated before my parents and grandparents would sit my brothers and me to fully explain the tradition that stretches from generation to generation. I would soon discover that my ancestors have took up arms for the U.S from the Civil war all the way up to modern times. I would also discover each one of my ancestors would serve and return home to raise their children in the military lifestyle and their children would serve and would continue for generations.
After learning the long stretching historical tradition I became greatly touched. Ever since I can remember I always wanted to serve in the military. My Mother would always tell me that I wanted to be a “soldier guy” I could never really fully understand why but now I do understand why I want to serve in U.S military. Learning from the lifestyle and the long tradition of serving in armed forces has overall touched me to continue this long running tradition.
I of course embrace the tradition of serving in U.S armed forces. My whole life I grew around the lifestyle of the military but later on when I learn of my family’s long tradition of serving has greatly influenced me to serve and protect my nation. I do understand the cost of serving but I know it’s a tradition and a duty I must keep going and hopefully my future generation will continue to pass on the same torch. Serving in nation’s defense apparently has become a tradition in my family and my brothers and I will keep it going.
