FoxFire Project

The Foxfire Project, begun by Eliot Wigginton and his students in the 1960s, was designed to save from oblivion the local color of a particular Southern region: the dialect, customs, recipes, antiques, manners, clothes, games and rituals of a particular area.

As a class, the students enrolled in Ms. Rojo's AP English Language and Composition class have compiled their own stories for their own version of a “Foxfire E-Magazine” renamed "Leafing".

Childhood Memories

I was born into a Mexican/American family, a big family in fact. It’s my grandpa, my grandma, mom, my sisters, and my brother. I’m the middle child which isn’t the best thing in the world. I have to listen to my older sister, Ariana and my little sister, Tiana, fight on a daily basis. I’m just there with the popcorn in my hands watching the show. We all had an amazing childhood, I mean, duh, we were 90s babies! Growing up, we were never able to have dogs so we had fish instead. We had to go through a various amount of pet fish because Tiana thought it would be nice to feed them her lollipops and her other candies. So, we had a fish murderer in the family. After going through that struggle and growing up a bit, I got into music. I was obsessed with guitars and singing due to the fact that I was around music all the time because of my parents. At the age of four, my dad bought me this guitar that later got its strings cut off by Tiana because she was mad at me for something I can’t remember. Also, a few video games that were ruined and scratched by her using thumbtacks because I wouldn’t let her play any of them…

Then by the age of five, my parents divorced. I was really sad because my dad was everything to me. I remember the chaotic scene between them like it was just yesterday. He left for good after that. I was really depressed, but he didn’t leave permanently, we still saw him on Sundays.

As we all grew older, we were finally able to have dogs. I remember my mom bringing home a puppy. She was beautiful! She had blue eyes and she was a boxer half doberman. Also, she really hated me for some reason. You can’t see but I have a really sad look on my face right now. We didn’t keep her though. Someone stole her from the yard which was really depressing.

We went through many dogs, but one in particular I could never forget that stole my heart. He was my baby. I was twelve when we got him and we named him “Kip”. The reason I talk about my pets so much is because they are family. I never considered them as pets and that was what Kip was. He was part of the family. He was the best dog ever, our number one dog! We got so attached to one another and he was the smartest dog ever! He knew almost everything. He didn’t stick around for long, though. Now, we have two new family members, a little brother who was born last year in February, who means the world to me, and a new dog, Jax. I couldn’t ask for a better family.
