FoxFire Project

The Foxfire Project, begun by Eliot Wigginton and his students in the 1960s, was designed to save from oblivion the local color of a particular Southern region: the dialect, customs, recipes, antiques, manners, clothes, games and rituals of a particular area.

As a class, the students enrolled in Ms. Rojo's AP English Language and Composition class have compiled their own stories for their own version of a “Foxfire E-Magazine” renamed "Leafing".

First communion

The day was here and I was ready for it. After all, this was what I had been taking classes and preparing myself for. As a catholic the first communion is one of the seven sacraments. To me it was just another step to complete my religious goal. My first communion wasn’t too long ago, maybe 3 years. It was on May 6. I was wearing a white dress and a rosary was hanging from my neck (the few times the rosary is permitted to be worn). The classes with my teacher, Mr. Mejia, had given great insight into what it meant to be a catholic and what we base our beliefs in. I was so ready to proceed this next big step.
Before we do our first communion, or take communion anytime, we must be absolved from any mortal sin. So the communion teachers made everyone confess. That was the final thing to do.
The ceremony for those doing their communion was beautiful. Colorful flowers and religious images decorated the church for this big celebration. The other communion kids and I entered the church in a row and sat at the front. The mass was similar as any other mass, we were still celebrating the Eucharist. The father proceeded as usual. Finally the time came, and it was our turn to take in the Eucharist. I never imagined how I would feel after I took the Eucharist. Would I feel different in any way? Truth is, it varies within each person. My personal experience? Well it was peaceful. My whole world lightened up and suddenly I didn’t have a care in the world. A wave of joy ran through my body as I took in the body of Christ. People say faith moves mountains, and I believe with great intensity.

  1. This is very nicely written! I like the imagery you put into it to bring the reader into your world, and the style of your writing is lovely.
