FoxFire Project

The Foxfire Project, begun by Eliot Wigginton and his students in the 1960s, was designed to save from oblivion the local color of a particular Southern region: the dialect, customs, recipes, antiques, manners, clothes, games and rituals of a particular area.

As a class, the students enrolled in Ms. Rojo's AP English Language and Composition class have compiled their own stories for their own version of a “Foxfire E-Magazine” renamed "Leafing".

First Love

Love prove to be the most powerful force in this planet we call Earth. It can take many forms throughout the world, the love between a children and his mom, or the love that is seen in an old couple of more than seventy years old. Nevertheless, everyone can be a target of this unstoppable force that makes almost all who are affected by it act in radical and unpredictable ways. Love usually appears right around the corner and would always catch off guard especially if it becomes your first love, making you feel like you’re going off the edge of madness.
My first love hit me when I was in freshman year in Austin High school. It was a day just like any other of my freshman year. Almost every day I met someone new or discovered something of the school. When out of the blue, the girl who would turn out to be the one who puts my world upside down and write her name all over it, appeared with a simple “hi”. Coincidently we were waiting in line to obtain our new uniforms for the magnet program, and her friend (which was also an acquaintance of mine) told her to talk to me as apparently I was somewhat cute. The line seemed not to move, so we talked and talked for at least an hour. As the line seemed to pick up the pace we had to say our farewells, but we promising we would pick up where we left off at.
The next couple of months made our friendship grew in abundance. Later it became clear that I had this unexplainable feeling when I was with her, I stood somewhere between happy and nervousness. I had never felt that way and so for the sake of knowledge I sought information with those of my trust and it turn out to be the unthinkable. I felt in love with the girl that quickly had become my best friend. “But what do I do next?” I asked those around me. It seemedobvious that I had to see if she shared the same feeling for me as I did for her. So the next couple of weeks I inspected how she felt for me.
Now up to this date, it’s been two years that we have shared our love. Looking at it she influences my likes and dislikes. She has also opened my eyes to different points of view that I was naïve to. Falling in love proves to be something we all experience throughout the course of our life whether we like it or not. It brings with it the ups and downs that give that spice into our lives. The love remains like something so magical that can be closer than you think.
