FoxFire Project

The Foxfire Project, begun by Eliot Wigginton and his students in the 1960s, was designed to save from oblivion the local color of a particular Southern region: the dialect, customs, recipes, antiques, manners, clothes, games and rituals of a particular area.

As a class, the students enrolled in Ms. Rojo's AP English Language and Composition class have compiled their own stories for their own version of a “Foxfire E-Magazine” renamed "Leafing".

From milk to friendship

We all recall our childhood love. Remembering how innocent our love was for someone brings a smile to our faces. My parents used to call it puppy love. When I was in third grade every girl at school had a crush on Ruben. He was athletic and charming. But as always I was the odd one out who had a crush on the kid whom everyone stayed away from. His name was Isaac. Isaac and I were best friends, everywhere I went he went, everywhere he went I went.
Isaac was sitting next to me during lunch time when I first met him. I had eaten all the good stuff from my plate and I was ready to throw away the rest. He noticed my milk was intact.
“Aren’t you going to drink your milk?” he repressed.
“No.” I turned to look at him with a surprised face. Why was he talking to me? And what does he care about my milk?
“Well I guess that explains why you are so short. My mom always told me to drink my milk so I can grow tall like my dad.”
I was so perplexed. I couldn’t take my eyes off him. Had he really just called me short? What was his problem? I sat there without saying a word. I finally unglued my eyes off him and looked at my milk. I took a hold of my milk and chugged it all down. Next I got up with attitude and went to throw my plate away.
For the rest of third through fifth grade, Isaac and I were inseparable. One time the teacher got mad at Isaac for running around in the classroom. I was sitting in my desk but I was laughing out loud. She automatically thought I was part if Isaac’s mischief. We both got afterschool detention that day. Everyone knew how close we were.
My childhood love ended when middle school came around. Due to our addresses I had to go to H.E. Charles Middle School and Isaac went to Nolan Middle School. Ever since, we have only talked through Facebook a couple times. He now goes to Andress High School. I never regret getting in trouble with Isaac, our memories are golden.
