Playing a video game now and then didn’t seem like a bad idea to get my mind off things. Sometimes they leave a life changing impact. For a brief moment I get to be character in a video game, which felt far more elaborate than this disgusting world known as “reality.” Alright, perhaps I’m exaggerating this a little. I’ve adapted to the real world as I grew older, however that doesn’t mean I threw surreal worlds out of the equation, that equation being my life. It’s like a delusion, but not as severe.
When one thinks of the term “gamer” it draws many things into one’s mind. A nerdy looking kid slapped in front a television screen or computer monitor as they obsessively stuff potato chips down their throat. I suppose this roughly represents me for the most part, but I believe there’s more to the inside of a gamer than what’s shown in the outside. The mind of the gamer is more involved than what people think. Besides playing the game, I always focused on the many aspects that make the game whole. Like the ingredients to make a delicious cake, you need to consider many aspects to create a good game. The music, characters, setting, story, and graphical fidelity, all contribute as the game’s ingredients. Superfluous information to the average person, but many geeks, like yours truly, can relate.
I reached over to my shelf of games to discover a game with its cover flashing an insectivore in red shoes. Sonic the Hedgehog… I thought, what an eccentric character. I popped the game in and switched my console on. The console’s fan’s roared as it booted. I was introduced to a familiar tune, followed by Sonic wagging his finger in front of a glamorous background. Impressed so far, I pressed start on my controller and the game faded into a glorious scenery.
Sonic ran fast. Real fast. Too fast and too quick for me to handle. The blue blur was running across my television screen like a blue rocket. It looked spectacular. I’ve never seen a game run so quickly before! There were so many thing in this game that I admired. The music sounded catchy, the setting contained flashy greens and blues and browns, the loopy loops emulated a roller coaster, and the character himself felt so involved, packed with personality. His impatient animation played whenever I left the controller alone, augmenting his cocky attitude. He spun into a spikey ball to defeat his enemies, and he sped up by building momentum through these traverse landscapes. That satisfying chime that played every time I collected a ring added to the immersion. I grinned like an idiot, eyes wider than Russia. I was playing Sonic the Hedgehog.
What a ride. I loved every moment of this roller coaster, the best attraction in any amusement park. All the appreciated little details in this game accentuated my passion for gaming. I love speed, I love the color blue, and I love video games.
Wow I never really thought that through I always thought games were a waste of time but your points made me understand games are like a story. Overall great examples and love the sonic reference.
