FoxFire Project

The Foxfire Project, begun by Eliot Wigginton and his students in the 1960s, was designed to save from oblivion the local color of a particular Southern region: the dialect, customs, recipes, antiques, manners, clothes, games and rituals of a particular area.

As a class, the students enrolled in Ms. Rojo's AP English Language and Composition class have compiled their own stories for their own version of a “Foxfire E-Magazine” renamed "Leafing".

“I now pronounce you husband and wife”

My cousin Daniel and I had just come back from the store when my cousin Pedro gave us the news. I still remember how he hesitated a little before telling us that he would get married in a few months with, his now fiancé, Jennifer. At first it was hard to believe it, but we were very happy about him. Pedro had always been the party man, the cousin who would always invite you to his house to play videogames with him, but now those days would be over.
Since that day a lot of planning went to the party. All twelve of my uncles and aunts supported my cousin one way or another. The wedding would consist of two parts the ceremony and the party.  Happiness could be felt in the environment. Suits, dresses and a lot of food were brought. A stack of 24 packs of beer was made against the wall and it would get bigger and bigger as the date of the wedding day got closer.
When the big day came, everyone was ready for it. A smorgasbord of food was made ranging from carnitas, steak, tacos and discadaThe party was diverting. Everyone had a good time and some of my family members that I hadn’t seen in a long time went to Juarez just for this event. The next day, the ceremony was voluptuous. The garden was simply beautiful for the ceremony and the groom and bride looked like they were having one of the best days of their lives.
Family is not a static thing. It changes with time and the roles of everyone changes. Pedro is now 30 years old. Sincerely, I never thought about he being married it was just a thought that never crossed my mind. I’m very glad for him because of his happiness in this stage of his life.
